This stone area calculator (or stone volume calculator) will help you to find the area, volume, weight, and even cost of stone. You can use it for both rectangular and circular shapes.

If you want to know how much stones weigh so that you can use stones of any shape in your project, keep reading — you'll soon find out!

💡 Check out some of our other tools — such as volume of a rectangular prism calculator and cylinder volume calculator — where we explain how you can find the volume of such objects in detail.

Stone calculator

Stones are used in construction for several purposes — in bridge piers, retaining walls, curbs, stone columns, swimming pools, as damp-proof courses and external cladding of walls, in monuments, and so much more. To learn more about this topic, we recommend that you check our crushed stone calculator, where you'll find out what crushed stones are, their different sizes, and how we can use them.

This stone calculator is a calculator that can simply help you find the volume of stones you need for your project based on the stone's dimensions. If you know the material and the cost per unit mass or unit volume in your region, you can also work out the costs of your stone, using the advanced mode of the calculator.

Circular stones

To calculate the surface area and volume of a circular stone, you need to know the thickness and the radius (or diameter). The radius is the straight line from the center to the boundary of the stone, or simply half of the diameter. You can enter your dimensions in imperial or metric units — the calculator will take care of any unit conversions so you don’t need to!

The calculator uses the following equations to calculate the area and the volume of a circular stone — you may note that we approximate circular stones as very flat cylinders.

area=π×radius2volume=π×radius2×thickness\footnotesize \begin{align*} \rm{area} &= \pi \times \rm{radius}^{2} \\ \rm{volume} &= \pi \times \rm{radius}^{2} \times \rm{thickness} \end{align*}

Rectangular stones

To calculate the volume of a rectangular stone, you need to know the width, the length, and the height of your stone. As we already mentioned, you can change the units in the calculator according to your needs.

The stone weight calculator uses the following equations to calculate the circular area and volume of a rectangular stone:

area=length×widthvolume=length×width×height\footnotesize \begin{align*} \rm{area} &= \rm{length} \times \rm{width} \\ \rm{volume} &= \rm{length} \times \rm{width} \times \rm{height} \end{align*}

How to calculate the weight of stone

Many types of stones can be used for building construction. Granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, and crushed stone are all valid choices, but which one you should use in your project depends on their properties.

If you know which material you're using, you can select it in our tool, and the calculator will give you the weight of the stone based on approximate values for the density of these stones. The density formula describes how heavy an object is per unit of volume — for example, the number of kilograms per cubic meter.

The density of stones depends mostly on their mineral composition (mineral densities and volume fractions) and its porosity. You can check some values of densities for different types of stones in the table below.

To calculate the weight of stone, you will need to follow the steps below:

  1. Find the volume from stone dimensions.
  2. Next, select the material or enter the density of the stones you want to use.
  3. Finally, our stone calculator will determine your the weight of the stone you have.

How to calculate cost of stone

If you want to know how much stones weigh, you can calculate the cost of stone using the calculator's advanced mode. However, you must know how much you'll need to pay for the stone.

To calculate the cost of the stone, follow the steps below:

  1. Find the volume from stone dimensions as you did when calculating the weight.
  2. Select the material or enter the density in order to get the weight.
  3. Set the price per mass/volume in your region.
  4. Finally, our calculator will give you the cost of the stone.

Calculation example

Let’s say you need rectangular granite gravel for a countertop, and the measurements are 50 inches long, 20 inches wide, and 2 inches tall.

Let’s also say that the selected gravel costs $15 per pound.

You can enter these measurements for length, width, height and density (the granite density of 1.556 oz/cu in1.556\rm{\ oz/cu\ in} is already available in the calculator), and then perform the following calculation to work out the cost for covering the countertop:

volume=length×width×heightvolume=50 in×20 in×2 involume=2,000 cu in=1.16 cu ft\footnotesize \begin{align*} \rm{volume} &= \rm{length} \times \rm{width} \times \rm{height}\\ \rm{volume} &= 50\rm{\ in} \times 20\rm{\ in} \times 2 \rm{\ in}\\ \rm{volume} &= 2,\!000 \rm{\ cu \ in} = 1.16 \rm{\ cu \ ft} \end{align*}
