7 years in the making, The Books of Jacob, widely dubbed as the magnum opus of the Polish 2018 Nobel Prize for literature laureate Olga Tokarczuk, has finally been translated into English. Long awaited by readers worldwide, the book is quickly garnering rave reviews, both from professional critics and casual readers. In fact, it has already accumulated almost five stars on Goodreads. The novel is one of the author's six works that have been translated into English.

If you'd like to jump on the literary bandwagon and want to know how much time it will take you to go through this, admittedly, imposing novel, as well as explore Tokarczuk's other literary works, you've found yourself in the right place. This calculator is designed to estimate how much time it will take you to read Olga Tokarczuk's books, allowing you to plan your literary endeavor accordingly. You can even get a custom recommendation of the order in which to read the writer's works. Without further ado, let's get to planning your journey through Olga Tokarczuk's fascinating stories!

Who is the Polish Nobel Prize laureate?

As a psychology graduate, Olga Tokarczuk began her professional career as a psychotherapist. Her first novel, titled Podróż ludzi Księgi (Journey of the People of the Book, not available in English), was not her literary debut - before that, she published the poetry anthology Miasto w Lustrach (The City in Mirrors, not available in English). Her books have since been translated into twenty different languages. What is more, many of her works have been adapted for both screen and stage.

The Nobel Prize is by no means the first time the author has been appreciated. She is also a Booker Prize laureate for her outstanding novel Bieguni (Flights, translated by Jennifer Croft). As well, two of her books (Flights and The Books of Jacob) have been awarded with the prestigious Polish Nike Literary Prize.

How does our calculator work?

Let's say you've secured a few days off during the upcoming spring break. You will have several days to yourself, and you're planning to spend them with a steaming cup of coffee and a good book in hand. You'd like to dedicate that time to reading the works of the Polish Nobel laureate, but you're not quite sure how many of them you can make it through before you're back to the real world.
Luckily, you can consult our calculator!

  1. Pick the day on which you will start reading. For the sake of this example, let's go with March 19th.
  2. Decide how may days you will be able to dedicate to reading. Let's pick 5, meaning that the end date, which you will see in the next field of the calculator, is March 24th.
  3. How fast of a reader are you? That's the next question you'll need to answer. For this example's sake, we'll assume your reading speed is average - you don't consume books whole, but it doesn't take you weeks to get through one novel.

🔎 Not sure about your reading speed? Don't worry. Head over to our reading speed calculator to have it estimated.

  1. You also need to state how much time you can spend reading daily. An hour? Two? Or maybe even five? That's for you to decide. For this presentation's sake, we'll go with four hours of reading per day.
  2. Finally, you will need to choose the order by which you want to organize the recommendations. Do you prioritize the highest rating? Or maybe book length is what you like to go by? Here, we will go for "By rating, from highest".

And voila! Under the calculator, you will see your proposed reading plan, based on your personal choices. In our case, we will spend the five days reading The Lost Soul, Primeval & Other Times, and House of Day, House of Night. How about you?

💡 What if you can't afford the luxury of taking several days off to catch up on reading? You can always try to find a moment or two during your daily commute or, if you drive, before going to bed. Research suggests that switching from screen to paper (or e-paper) in the evening can do wonders for healthy sleep.
And a small tip stemming from our personal experience - cutting down on social media, you might find you have loads of time to spare for books 😉

I want to read ALL the books!

No matter how long it takes, I want to read all of Olga Tokarczuk's works! Worry not - our calculator is ready for this scenario, too.
Simply pick the "plenty of time" option from the drop-down menu in the first field. Instead of pondering on the number of days you could dedicate, all you'll need to do is indicate your reading speed, and you'll be given the full list of the author's books (those translated to English), together with a time estimation.

🙋 Love a good reading challenge? We have a whole new idea for you. How about trying your hand at writing a novel on your own with the nanowrimo calculator? 😄

Literary Nobel - what even is it?

The Nobel Prize is one of the biggest achievements in the world of literature. First presented in 1901, it's always been rewarded to authors who honor the ideals of the Nobel Prize's founder, Alfred Nobel (no, not inventing dynamite).

In the past, four Polish author have been awarded the literary Nobel Prize: Wisława Szymborska (1996), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Władysław Reymont (1924) , and Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905).

Literary Nobel Prize laureates from America include Bob Dylan (2016), Toni Morrison (1993), John Steinbeck (1962), and Ernest Hemingway (1954).
