Our minute calculator lets you easily convert between minutes and any other units of time from seconds to years, and vice versa. You can convert one day to minutes, seconds to minutes, minutes to hours, and find out the equivalent time in minutes of any duration you enter. This minutes converter can also convert any time in minutes to any other units of time, and answer questions such as:

  • How many seconds in a minute?
  • How many minutes in an hour?
  • How many minutes in a day?
  • Or how many minutes in a year?
  • And many more…

When using our minute calculator, you can enter decimal time values like 3.2 minutes, 43.7 hours, or 1.5 years and the minute calculator will give you the equivalent values in decimal minutes, but also in all other decimal time units. If you're not sure how decimals work in the context of time, visit Omni's time to decimal calculator.

In adding mode, our minute calculator allows you to add up to 10 different time values and gives you the result in hrs:min:sec notation or any other time unit you choose.

How long is a minute and where does it come from?

We regularly use the minute along with the second and the hour as very common units of time. We also use the day, the week, the month, and the year to measure longer time durations. But how are these units defined and how to convert between them? How many minutes are there in a day? How many minutes in an hour? And how many seconds in a minute?

Originally, the day was the first unit to get defined as the time it took the earth to complete one full rotation around its axis. The day was divided into 24 equal parts, called hours. Each hour was then divided into 60 equal parts: the minutes. Finally, the minute was also divided into 60 equal parts to define the second. Later, a more accurate and constant formal definition put the second as the universal base unit of time: One second is equal to the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom.

Minutes converter and other units of time

Converting between minutes and other units of time can answer questions like how many minutes in a year or how many minutes in a day, and many others. These time conversions can be carried out based on the following equations:

  • time in minutes = time in seconds / 60
  • time in minutes = time in hours × 60
  • time in minutes = time in days × 24 × 60
  • time in minutes = time in weeks × 7 × 24 × 60
  • time in minutes = time in months × 30.44 × 24 × 60 (where 30.44 is the average number of days in a month)
  • time in minutes = time in years × 365.25 × 24 × 60 (where 365.25 is the average number of days in a year)

You can also use our minutes converter to convert between minutes and hrs:min:sec time unit, or vice versa.

Now that you know how the minute calculator works, and how to calculate the time in minutes given any other time unit (like how many minutes in a day, or how many minutes in an hour...), let's go through an example and show you how you can use our minute calculator to convert between any combination of time units.

Using the minute calculator to measure time in minutes and other units

Our minutes converter allows you to calculate the time in minutes of any duration you input in any one of the other available time units. You can also input a time in minutes and see how much it would be in other units of time (how many seconds in a minute for example). But that's not all, you can basically enter any value in any time unit and the minute calculator will give you the equivalent values in all other units!

Let's say, for example, that you're arguing with a friend about which is more expensive to rent: an electric scooter for 25 cents per minute or a supercar at 350 dollars per day. You can easily solve this debate by using our minute calculator:

  1. You enter 1 in the days field of the calculator;
  2. The calculator converts one day to minutes and gives you the answer in the minutes field: 1440 minutes; and
  3. You multiply 1440 by 0.25 to get the daily rent of the scooter: 360 dollars.

The car wins by a close call! But not when you factor in fuel consumption… 😉.

The adding mode of the calculator allows you to add up to 10 different time values in hrs:min:sec notation. For example, let's say that you and your friends are planning to watch the entire Lord of the Rings film series this weekend. You know that the first part is 2h, 58min, and 15sec long; the second one is 2h, 59min, and 3sec long; and the third one is 3h, 20min, and 52sec long. If you wish to know how much time it would take to watch the full trilogy, you can enter these values in the fields Time 1, Time 2, and Time 3 of the adding mode of the calculator, and it will give you the result in the field Total time; in this case: 9h, 18min, and 10sec. Good luck with that! And don't forget to bring enough popcorn 🍿

It is important when measuring something, anything, to use the appropriate units (imagine we were using seconds instead of years to measure our age…). When you need to convert between different time units, you can use our UNIX time converter
