Place-value system

Place value is the value of each digit in a number based upon the digit's position. For instance, the number 44 has the same digits twice, but they differ in their value. Forty-four is comprised of 40 + 4. A four in the ones place and the other four in the tens place, making it forty. This is how place value systems work. But they should not be confused with face value as that describes the value of the digit, regardless of its position in a number.

In our crore to million converter, we focus on two place value systems:

  • International place value system

The international place value system is the numeral system used all around the globe except for a few countries which use, e.g., the Indian place-value system.

The counting is done in ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, and billions.
The number 92,345,674 is read as ninety-two million, three hundred and forty-five thousand, six hundred and seventy-four in the international place-value system.

  • Indian place-value system

The countries using the Indian place-value system are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. The counting is done in ones or units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and lakhs.

In the Indian place-value system, the same number is written as 9,23,45,674 and read as nine crores, twenty-three lakhs, forty-five thousand, six hundred and seventy-four.

Let's consider the number given in the table, 753108642. It is read and written in two ways.

  • In the International System, 753,108,642 - 7 hundred 53 million, 1 hundred and 8 thousand, and 6 hundred and 42. Also, notice the period placements - there are 3 digits in each group.
  • In the Indian system, 75,31,08,642 - 75 crores, 31 lakh, 8 thousand, 6 hundred, and 42.

You may notice the placement of the periods is a bit different as well. It is because each group contains 2 digits after the ones group.
