What is the BMI in weight management?

BMI is considered the most vital metrics in weight management. This is because weight alone gives only a little information about this, as an individual's ideal weight will differ from those around them. The BMI is usually based on factors such as your age, sex, and height.

The BMI, also known as the body mass index, was introduced to overcome this obstacle by dividing the weight by the square of the person's height. This ratio is then fitted into different BMI ranges to deduce the healthy weight of the person.

Hence, to understand your ideal weight, we first need to know your ideal BMI, which is discussed in the following sections.

Without further ado, let's dive into understanding how to calculate weight loss based on BMI.

How to calculate BMI using the BMI formula?

Using the BMI weight formula involves 3 steps:

  1. Determine your weight

This can be easily done just by standing on the weight scale. You can input your weight in three different units, namely kilograms, pounds, and stones.

  1. Determine your height

The second step is equally easy - just measure your height and input the number into our calculator.

  1. The last step is to calculate the BMI

The BMI can be calculated using the BMI weight formula below:

BMI = weight / height²

If you want to know how to calculate BMI weight loss from two BMI's, then our calculator should help with that issue. We described the procedure of finding weight loss based on BMI in the following section.

How to use this BMI and weight loss calculator?

Next, put in your target BMI and our calculator will tell you your target weight and how much weight you need to gain or lose to reach that point (weight loss according to BMI). Our BMI weight loss calculator will also tell you what will be your BMI percentile once you reach your target BMI.

What is your ideal weight and healthy BMI weight?

There are two ways to determine your healthy BMI weight in weight management.

  1. The first way is to use BMI to determine your ideal weight.

The BMI can be categorized into 5 ranges, as shown below:

  • Underweight: < 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 - 24.9
  • Overweight: 25 - 29.9
  • Obesity: 30 - 35
  • Severe obesity: > 35

Hence, your ideal weight should give you a BMI between 18.5 to 24.9.

  1. Another way of determining your healthy BMI is to use the BMI Prime metric.

BMI Prime represents the range of normal BMI, which is from 18.5 to 24.9 BMI. If your BMI Prime is more than 1, it means that you're overweight and should do something to bring it down.

How do I get to my healthy weight?

So, if your current weight is more than your healthy weight, what should you do? Worry not! There are three main ways that we can advise you on how to lose BMI weight.

  • The first option is to reduce your daily intake of calories. This involves consuming less high-energy food such as rice, potato and eat more food like vegetables and fruits. Our calorie calculator can help you to plan around this.

  • You can also reduce your salt intake. This will help you to avoid fatty, unhealthy food such as junk foods and ready meals.

  • Last, but not least, you should also exercise more regularly. This will not only help you to burn more calories, but it can also potentially increase your basal metabolic rate. You can use Omni running calorie calculator to find out how many calories do you burn while running.
