How to add hours and minutes

Adding hours and minutes only requires us to remember that an hour is equal to 60 minutes. To better visualize this concept, let's consider an example. Let's say we want to know how much time it will take to finish two movies that are 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours and 33 minutes long.

  1. First, we extract the minute values of the two movie durations. Those would be 45 minutes and 33 minutes, respectively.
  2. Then, we add them to get 45 minutes + 33 minutes = 78 minutes.
  3. Since our total minutes exceed 60, we take 60 minutes from it and add that to the hours portion of our time values. That gives us a remaining 78 minutes - 60 minutes = 18 minutes.
  4. We then add the hours portions of our two movie durations, 1 hour and 2 hours, respectively, and then add the other hour we obtained from the sum of the minutes to have: 1 hour + 2 hours + 1 hour = 4 hours.
  5. Lastly, we combine the total hours and minutes to have 4 hours and 18 minutes total movie duration.

FAQ

How many minutes are there in an hour?

There are 60 minutes in an hour. So if we're told the time right now is 9:40 a.m., we need to wait for 20 minutes more for 10:00 a.m.

That is because to reach 10:00 a.m., we need 60 more minutes past 9:00 a.m. Since we're already 40 minutes past 9 a.m., we only need 60 minutes - 40 minutes = 20 minutes more to reach 10:00 a.m.

How do I find 125 minutes after 2 o'clock in the afternoon?

To find the time 125 minutes after 2:00 p.m.:

  1. First, find how many hours are there in 125 minutes by subtracting increments of 60 minutes from 125 minutes:
    • 125 - 60 = 65 minutes
    • 65 - 60 = 5 minutes
  2. Since we can subtract 60 twice from 125, we can say that there are 2 hours in 125 minutes.
  3. We can also say we have a remainder of 5 minutes after subtracting 2 hours from 125 minutes.
  4. Now add 2 hours and 5 minutes to 2:00 p.m. to get 4:05 p.m..
